In July 2016 the Mayor of London awarded the City of London £1 million over three years to implement the ‘Low Emission Neighbourhood’ (LEN) in the Barbican and Golden Lane area. The City of London LEN is one of five that will be set up across eight boroughs that will come into full effect by the start of 2019.

Vandalism in Ben Jonson House

It seems that some people have taken to vandalising bits of Ben Jonson House. Letters and symbols have been scored into lift doors.  It will cost £158.66 inclusive of VAT (at the latest estimate). per lift to fix the damage, so it's no small matter. If you have information about this please let Sheila Delaney, our house officer, know (Sheila.Delaney@cityoflondon.gov.uk).

The Golden Lane Estate Residents Association (GLERA) have mounted a campaign to oppose the proposals for redeveloping the old Richard Cloudsley school site.

They have produced posters which show the scale of the proposed new building against the Golden Lane Estate, and they have engaged with the press.  A press photographer held a photo session this morning.

City-wide Residents Meeting: 8 May 2017

From time to time the City invites residents to meet the people who work for the City.  In the past the meeting has taken the form of a reception with stalls run by various City departments where you can meet planners, cleansers, health care people and City of London police officers ... plus stalls for a few invited good causes.  After the reception the meeting is a lecture-hall style panel of City managers presenting what their teams have been up to over the last year, and what they think they will be doing next year.  There is also a chance for residents to put questions to the panel.

It's also a really good chance to look inside one of the oldest and most impressive buildings in London, the Great Hall of the Guildhall.

Our CPAs

CPA is an abbreviation of Car Park Attendant, but our Breton & Ben Jonson CPAs do much more for us than just look after the car park.   Our CPAs also act as our building concierge, looking after visitors and also looking after the flood of Internet driven parcels (a deluge at Christmas time!).  Our CPAs also look after our security, they walk the building to help keep it secure and in good order, and they are also there if we need help with a noisy neighbour or if we need emergency assistance.

From time to time the City floats the idea of saving money by removing our CPAs, but each time this has happened the City has been reminded how highly they are valued.

Currently our CPAs are:

Paul Nixon
Dinesh Pereira
Israel Lawson
Peter Jones

New Residents' Manual in cute 1980's binder

I have received a copy of the new residents manual in a swanky ring binder with My Little Pony pink lettering.  The few pages of the manual look very lonely in the ring binder which looks like it could hold many hundreds of pages.  I don't have room for the binder so I'll be returning it to the estate office in the hope that they'll be able to find something useful to do with it.

I have scanned the 23 pages included in the ring binder as a PDF document which you can get by clicking the image below.

Click the image to read the manual as presented in the binder.

Richard Cloudesley School site proposals

The Richard Cloudesley School was based at the northern end of Golden Lane, on the western side of the road just south of Baltic Street East.  The school is now part of the Golden Lane Campus site immediately to the north of Breton House.

Proposals for the vacated site have been put up on a web site here, but I have included the key bits of information here as an archive of what was being presented.  Click on each image to view a larger version.

Demolition of BMH - off again

The application submitted by Taylor Wimpey which would have allowed them to demolish Bernard Morgan House this month has been withdrawn. No reason was given, but there were many errors in the application made by Taylor Wimpey.

The handling of this application is reckoned to be a bit of a PR disaster for the Applicant.

The Planning Application for the new building will be heard by the Planning Committee on Tuesday, 2 May, and this will include consideration of the demolition.

Here is the notice of the withdrawal:
